Memories

I think you know what I’m getting at,
I find it so upsetting that,
The memories that you select,
You keep the bad but the good you just forget.

Which To Bury, Us Or The Hatchet? – Relient K

I think that everyone tends to look back on things and remember the bad bits, and not quite remember the good bits, unless they were REALLY good. And even then the good memories are sometimes outweighed by the bad. For example, Year 9 camp was heaps fun, met a lot of people…FELL OFF BIKE. So was Monash Camp, learned a lot about friends and had fun away from home…ROOM WAS TOO HOT, BED WAS TOO SOFT. And so it goes on.

Anyway, just then I had my Canadian friend Simon link me to a video he made. Y’all know about “misheard lyrics” where people get a song with slightly hard to understand pronunciated lyrics, and put funny fake ones to it? Also, you all know about the Numa Numa guy? Danced to that song Dragostea Din Tei (Rhianna used the “Maya Hee Maya Hoo Maya Ha Maya Ha-ha” part in a song, I think). Anyway, Simon did Misheard Lyrics to that song. Here it is.

Keep Cool (and remember the good times)

  1. actually, studies have shown that the mood you’re in triggers a specific memory (state-dependent cues) so if you’re feeling sad, you’ll remember sad memories, if you’re happy, you’ll remember happy memories. Obviously, big things like getting badly hurt or meeting someone important will stand out more but it really does depend on the cue you use when you’re reminiscing.

Oh wow that is so incredibly cool! I didn’t realize that! So if it’s a hot day and I think back on Monash Camp I’d remember the hot room, but if it was a cooler day I might remember the windy morning of Tuesday? Where do you get these studies from? That is seriously so awesome. Lol keep telling me these trivia things!

  2. I tend to remember the good parts of life. Even when I am sad I remember the good things in the past to cheer up in the present.
When I revisit some places I remember being there during past relationships. Being happy in a current relationship gets you over that aspect very well.

You’re a very optimistic person to be able to focus on the good things in life, I reckon. And yeah it’s true that being happy in a current relationship does help you to get over the memories of past relationships, but also your infinite optimism and resolution to “get over the past” and look into the future.

  3. this reminds me of our talk when we picked up the turn left sign and martinie was in the middle. XD

Mm remind me what the gist of that conversation was I can’t seem to recall it.

  4. do you think you’re more optimistic than you were in previous years? somehow i feel more stable and now the description of a cynical pessimistic doesn’t quite fit with me anymore. i was replying an email to a friend who was feeling down and i was incredibly optimistic to the point that the glass was overflowing. =S

Couldn’t really drench you in any of my new found optimism tonight whilst on the phone..tooo sleeeeeeepy.

have a good sunday of chinese school and tuition..muhaha.

Certainly there is more to be optimistic about, these days. I am very very very happy to hear that you don’t see yourself as a cynical pessimist anymore. How we perceive ourselves have a lot to do with how others perceive us. And yeah, you were mumbling a lot. You should, you know, sleep, instead of using Facebook.
