I’d Raster Use Vector

I apologize for the ghastly pun. In this post, I will explore the differences between using Bitmap (Raster) to draw and Vector based techniques. This is slightly different to my discussion on digital editing techniques, because this includes creating completely new images and shapes using different software.

In Dr Jenny Weight’s lecture, she expresses the difference between Bitmap and Vector, with the former being the more “organic” form of drawing, and the latter giving a more “inhuman” look.

I use these quotation marks because either traits really depend on the skill of each artist. Bitmap drawings can look phenomenal, even photorealistic, but can only really be so if the artist has a good grasp of how to employ the software, and a good sense of artistic creation.

Similarly, Vector art can be used to create amazing graphic designs, but the designer would need to know how to use the software to manipulate the lines to be sharp and perfect.

The two images above are examples of amateur level art created using, respectively, bitmap drawing and vector drawing. The drawing of Janelle Monae can be considered photorealistic, as the artist used layers of coloring to create shadows and texture of the subject. 90’s Kid (sic) features less texture, rather opting for blocky, cartoony coloring linework.

Neither approaches are in any way ‘easier’ than the other – to create beautiful artwork on either format requires a good set of skills in utilizing the software, and an eye for detail. It is perhaps easier to edit photos using bitmap tools than vector tools, however it is infinitely better and cleaner to use vectors for graphic design purposes. Often, a project would require the usage of both styles of drawing and editing (such as, for the hundredth time, the art tests that I did in the previous posts).

Some Korean guy

I drew this today as my 365. Day 211.

All the modest “this-picture-is-crap” captions are there.

I should draw more again. And not just anime style either. I want to draw weird fantastic things like Tim Burton did.

P.S. I don’t usually do weird arty paragraph styling but since it’s a picture post I figured, hey, right. Your normal left side paragraphs will be back next post.d

Happy Buzz-day, Bianca!

(That was by far the best pun I’ve done in a long time)

Hey everyone! It’s Bianca’s birthday today, and she is now legally sue-able.

Okay, so basically what happened?

This morning I made sure I was on time for the train, and gave Bee a huge hug. Fel’s mom had given Bee some chocolates, which was rather nice of Fel’s mom. Carmaine was on at Glen Waverley, looking very cool with her purple (mauve?) beret.

Spanna got on at Mount Waverley, looking very very dead. I sort of pointed meaningfully at Bee, but all Spanna did was nod at me, until I had to say, “it’s her birthday today!” to which Spanna actually responded, surprise.

Shaz was boasting about how she got her text in first. I thought I’d’ve been first, except Bee actually said she hadn’t received mine at all. My heart broke into tiny tiny tiny little emo pieces. I showed her the text from my phone. (She told me later that she’d received it at 11:56 pm…)

We got to Flinders St, and a tired looking Dom wished Bianca happy birthday (yes I commanded him to). We went to Flawless Flowers and Bee bought herself flowers (? Don’t ask). We got to the tram stop and the tram announcer, the one who sings, was there. So as we passed him Emily and I asked him if he could wish our friend Bianca a happy birthday. So he did. And then he sang happy birthday to her. We laughed all the way onto the tram.

At school, I walked into the locker bay, with Bianca already inside, and said loudly, “What’s this? It’s Bianca’s birthday today? People should say happy birthday to her?” and of course everyone like the sheep that they are bid her happiness of the day. Then, when Period 1 started for Bee, I played my trump card.

I spent an entire evening on Monday drawing up an acrostic poem/poster for Bee. I didn’t have the insight to scan it so I can’t show it to you here, but I’d basically braved death by Sharpie fumes to draw Bee an A4 sheet of awesomeness. I stuck it onto her locker. Yes, she liked it. [insert huge smiley face]

Eunice and Mary made mini pancakes during recess in the Common Room, and Carmaine Dani and I nibbled on them. Bianca sort of floated around…and then I lost her.

Lunchtime! Bee was at a Formal Committee meeting, and I at Yr 12 Video. Then when we were done, I went to find Dani and April. Carmaine joined us after a while, and took the SLR which I was mucking around on.

Bee said bye because she had frees, and Carmaine and I went to slog it off in double Methods.

After school, Catherine and April went with me to ATO, then I took the train home with Catherine.

Then, something really awesome happened:

bee-note-compressed(Sorry, I didn’t scan it in properly…the date was blurry so I typed it in instead)

Whomever “Teddy” is, this is just a perfect birthday gift isn’t it? Maybe “Teddy” knew it was your birthday coming up, Princess.

And that’s about it. I know I tapered off the topic of Bee for a bit but I came back again, didn’t I?

Have a wonderful (rest of the) day, Bianca darling. Baby. Munchkins. Haha no no jokes. Have a good day and I look forward to Saturday.

Alex.

It’s all good…

As expected a lull in my enthusiasm to do well has appeared. I’m finding myself not doing anything this afternoon because I hadn’t taken home the reading I should do for English or English Language. I suppose I’ll do them tomorrow. I’m slightly ahead in Methods, thanks to Jack, and I’m on par in Legal, as are everyone else. Chinese hasn’t started kicking in yet.

I wasted my triple free this afternoon. I doubt I will next week. I should’ve done reading. Instead, though, I hung out with Nug, which in itself wasn’t too bad. I like hanging out with that girl, she’s always up for a decent laugh.

I drew 2 pictures on the Common Room board today, I don’t know if anyone’ll notice or like it (seeing as maybe someone might rub it off…aw). One was Nug being sick (or Doojed, as it should be pronounced), and the other was a Pon & Zi character. I signed them both as D.F. so people who read this blog might know.

Settling into school-life is rather synonymous with “not much to blog about”. I don’t think anyone would want to hear about what happens at school. Besides, everyone’s still into that “gotta study” phase, and until that wears out not much fun will happen. I haven’t really hung out or been around my form’s group much, I’ve spent more time with Dani. I think she needs it, poor sod’s been separated from her “joined-at-the-groin” Hamwu.

I’ve done something odd to my right elbow. I can’t bend nor straighten it to its limit, which is a worry. It’s constantly sore, and gone a tad swollen. Maybe I picked up something too heavy? There are a few other ailments as well; Nugen (Doojed) is drastically ill from not having dried her hair at camp (neither did I but I’m okay). My princess had a headache and went home early, leaving me to take the train with the Yr 11s, which, admittably, isn’t too bad. Carmaine says she reckons she’s coming down with something (or something along those lines of not being 100% peachy), and Vasper (ha in joke) is feeling crummy as well. I have to be careful. I mean, aside from the fact that my “ee-byood zisdub” is rather the awesome, I still have to be careful. Which reminds me, I should go put on socks soon.

Keep Cool (and in your heart the 131 confirmed so far, and the many to come, who have lost their lives in the darkest weekend Victoria have come across thus far)
