The Good Ol’ Times

I went to dinner with BRuCEĀ  (an acronym I haven’t used in MONTHS, so for those who aren’t familiar with it, it stands for Bianca, Ruyi (my Chinese name), Carmaine and Eunice. We were like the Awesome Foursome in high school. Alongside with these three, there were the two Danis, Dani and D.P., and Andrew.

It wasn’t that we had more laughs or anything like that – laughs are had with any group of good friends – but it was that familiar feeling. Like when you ride a bike after a long time not riding it and you realize, fuck yeah, bikes are awesome! Or when you discover some food you loved as a kid, and when you eat it you’re worried you won’t like it as much as you did back then, only to realize that the food is still great.

Everyone was as I remembered them – Eunice arrived late and shared enthusiasm over Bones and Glee, Dani was dressed well and had very random references to movies (and dressed well), D.P., ate a lot and was very happy all the time, Andrew made fun of Carmaine and myself but in the end was still the only guy there, Bianca was all smiles and knowledgeable insights and pleasured groans when eating cookies, and Carmaine was tall. Hahaha tall.

After nearly 8 months of not hanging out, I think it was this dinner that sort of re-opened that need for reunions and get-togethers – at least for me it was. I’m looking forward to the next time everyone managed to get some time off.

Anyway, I’m stuffed on carbohydrates – pizza and pasta for dinner – and I have a few more errands to run in anticipation for tomorrow (Steven’s BBQ) so I’ll cut this short.

Where Our Roots Have Grown So Deep

[This Is Our Town – We The Kings]

Today I caught up with 2 groups for reunions (coincidental planning), and dragged Jac along with me.

Dressed in the new hoodie I bought at Chadstone, I waited 2 extra trains for the as-ever-late Jac. We got to the city, where she went to do some Uni thing, and I waited for everyone to arrive.

Gil (Pearl, but I cal her Gil) and Pal arrived first, and they went to get crepes. Shortly after them, Cathy, Sisi, Alex+Jack (twins, who I will refer to as Jalex) and Cathy’s boyfriend Carey arrived, and we all decided what we’d do. We agreed on going to Chaplin to karaoke, as we did the last time we all caught up, but after FINALLY walking there we realized the place doesn’t open until 3 in the afternoon. So instead we went to the bowling venue in Melb Central, which had a lovely interior, with chandeliers and all that jazz. Jac came along halfway through the game, and we both watched (having bowled just the previous day) the others bowl.

Highlight? Gil’s thin fragile-looking arm seemed to snap back everytime she tried to bowl. It scared the crap out of me, and everyone else when I brought their attention to it. Pal pwned everyone, the underdog and what not.

I mucked around a lot while watching everyone bowl, including stealing Cathy’s hat and messing up her hair (she responded with tickling me) and also attempting to tickle/poke Gil at every chance I got. Then, when I went to hug Cathy, she freaking lifted me off the floor and laughed at my “flailing arms and legs”. Well she got her comeuppance when later her and Carey started playing DDR, and her failure rendered a completely random kid (around 4 or 5) coming up and trying to help her.

After that, we decided to go to lunch. Some people wanted Nandos chips, some wanted KFC chicken, some wanted sushi, some wanted Hungry Jack’s – but mostly Pal, Gil and me just wanted chilli food. So we all went our separate ways to buy the bits of food we wanted, and then all came together and feasted at Nandos – which probably wasn’t very nice to them but we DID buy stuff from them.

Jalex work at the Melbourne Aquarium, and they told us the story about how some people got drunk, snuck into the aquarium and went shark-diving at 3 am while plastered. Then, as conversations with the twins always do, sex-ed got brought up. The poor, innocent Jac sat at the end of the table mouth gaping open in shock.

After lunch, they headed to Chaplin but to our shock we realized that Jac and I were late. So after parting our ways at Elizabeth Street, Jac and I went back down to Glen to meet up with my 2nd reunion (yes Jac got dragged along to that as well).

The 2nd reunion was with the Glen Waverley train line from back in high school, and having shown up 1 hour late I was still greeted warmly by everyone. Nat had died her hair, Bee’s fringe had grown out, Carm’s hair is shorter, Eunice looked the same, Shaz still talked non-stop, Sneha got to meet the person who ACTUALLY went to the party she got tagged wrongly (by me) in, and Emily was still smiley as always.

Highlight? Nat was arguing against Shaz, and in a desperate attempt to win back a losing fight, she shouted to Shaz, “WELL YOU HAVE CAKE ON YOUR TEETH! HA TAKE THAT!”

We sat for about 40 minutes, but when Bee made acts of needing to leave, Jac and I decided to follow suit. We bid goodbye to everyone – me hoping to see them again, and them agreeing with what Dani said yesterday about how Jac looks like another MacRobbian – and bussed home. Now my feet hurt like fuck.

I will take pictures of my presents tomorrow, and edit the post later.

Hello Again

Yesterday was a day for reunion.

In the morning, I took the train up with April to the city so we could all meet up. Waiting at Flinders St station, I bumped into 2 people who I knew from my previous high school Brentwood. When the 2nd friend came along – Rach – I was rather pleased to hear Julia say, “How many people do you know?!”

Tiffany came along last, and when she arrived, we set off for Southside, in South Melbourne (it’s en route to Dani’s apartment via the Number 1 tram). We settled, and started ordering drinks and foods. April’s dish came first, and it was insanely large sized. We didn’t think she could finish it! (This isn’t one of those “but to our surprise she did” stories. She didn’t finish it.) Vania got her gnocchi, and seeing the large serving, we decided there was no way Vania – or any of us bar Jen – could finish it either.

We ate, and talked. There was a small discussion of Tom Felton started by Julia (the discussion was originally started by Jen about Rupert Grint). Pictures were taken, and then Bel gave Tiffany a “bear hug” with velcro bear-paw gloves! They were fantastic gloves.

Julia waited ages for her steak to arrive – long enough that everyone did their round of “maybe they’re still killing the cow in the back” jokes. As Julia worked her way through a steak larger than her face, April and Vania gave up on their dishes. The owner of the restaurant warned them that if they didn’t finish their food, they’re not allowed out.

Jen started eating other people’s food. It was to be expected, no?

After paying for lunch, we took the tram back to the CBD. Most of the girls got off at Flinders Station, and then SonJ and Jen got off at Colins St to go grocery (Coco Pops) shopping. Annie, April and I went all the way to Melb Central to meet up with Dani and Andrew who were already there.

April stayed under the clock waiting for Si, and Annie went to Borders to find Josh and Anna who were supposed to meet us as well.

I went downstairs and found Dani, and it was a lovely familiar feeling seeing her face again. We went back up and waited for Josh and Anna under the clock. It took them a while but eventually they arrived. After that, we went to Room 8 on Bourke St to play pool – my first time there. Watched Andrew be all hardcore with a pool glove. He won every match yesterday, with the closest game being between him and Si, both being on the final 8 ball. I played around on Dani’s iPhone. We played (they played) for 2 hours, and then we went to…where else…Red Silks for dinner.

During dinner, (Dani left halfway to meet her mom) Andrew was having a bitchfest to us about a member of Dani’s family. It involved a lot of swearing. Anna’s ears were ASSAULTED by the amount that Andrew was swearing.

After dinner, walking out, everyone voiced that they weren’t SO interested in going to see Nina Conti in the comedy festival. April was also sick! She didn’t tell me. So in the end, it was decided that Josh and Anna will go see a movie together, and April, Simon, Andrew and I took the train home after a detour to Laguna the Asian grocery.

Got home, watched a spot of TV, and then slept. I felt inexplicably drained after the day.

Oh, right, I have decided I may not adopt the calendar style for the 365, and simply just take 1 picture each day and post it. I do have a link for the site. I might link that picture back to a post here, each day, in the case I write one. Of course, I wouldn’t have to put too much effort into it because it’s just a webcam thing, but I figure Project 365 shouldn’t be taking over my life, but be a part of it. So. There you go. You’ll start seeing my work up soon!

Sealed The Exits With Caution Tape

[Dear Vienna – Owl City]

Clearly I’m playing Owl City today haha. Okay, today I caught up with some primary school friends.

Sorry, I guess I’ll be dropping a lot of new names here.

I got on the train this morning at 10:26 (which is earlier than I’ve been waking lately) and saw Ula when she walked on. Got excited ‘cos it’s about 19 days ’til her wedding! Nice.

Ka- called me freaking because she apparently doesn’t take trains often, so she ran onto a carriage and thought, “Okay I’ll stay here and they’ll figure out how to find me.” I told her to go up the train, and when she was running up, she heard the announcement that the train was on Platform 2, so she freaked and ran into the wrong carriage again.

Okay, okay sorry I had to say it! Noob…

Cas got on at Mount Waverley, and it was really great to see those two again, because I haven’t seen Cas since Yr 10 (or thereabouts) and I haven’t seen Ka- since Gr 6.

Talk talk talk on train. Ka- had an awful cold. Then got off at Richmond, and waited for Yas. I made a bit more fun of Ka- regarding trains, and Cas said, “Oh come on, don’t call her a noob, especially when she doesn’t know what it means.”

We high fived.

Yas appeared (hadn’t seen her since Gr 6 pretty much, either) and we took the train to South Yarra. I didn’t get lost to Jam Factory this time! Got our tickets and sat down at Gloria Jean’s outside for some drinks. Some guy in there had PMS or something and demanded a refund for a drink they messed up, so we got 2 free drinks.

Chatted, caught up, laughed a lot (Yas laughs like an old bed-spring) and then went to see Sherlock Holmes.

Yas and Ka- were pretty noisy but it was funny because…well when you haven’t seen friends in a long time everything they do is weird but funny. I felt sleepy halfway through, and didn’t enjoy the movie as much as reviews would’ve suggested I do. Still pretty cool the way he fought, and deducted from observations.

Went back to Flinders and then went to Melb Central. Unfortunately we passed Photoplus where Ka- (a while girl, no less) insisted we get sticker photos. Of the 4 that were printed, I wasn’t in one of them because Cas stabbed my ribs and I jerked out of the shot. Lovely.

Cas had to leave at that point, so after getting some quick sushi she left. I took Yas and Ka- to Big W and got these babies:

Many thanks to Katherine for telling me they were on sale! Big W for 30 bucks. Not bad bass for it, too!

At that point we went back to Melb Central and decided to go home. Said bye to Yas and took the old ass train with Ka-. It was really hot! Just our luck to ride that bloody train too. Discussed TV shows on the way back (NCIS being a clear favorite. Go NCIS.) and then bid her farewell while I took the bus home.

Nina was meant to come but she…couldn’t. So I think another reunion is in sight! Very much looking forward to it.

Alex.

P.S. It was endearing that they tried so hard to call me Alex (I forgot and called myself by my other name), and apparently I never showed affection to them, so me hugging them was new. Huh.

Haven’t seen you in a while

Today on the tram ride to Flinders, as a joke, when I sat down next to Jen I pretended that I hadn’t seen her in a while.

“Oh hey! It’s been a while, how’ve you been?” said I.

“I’ve been well,” said Jen.

“Yeah? Katie’s grown up a bit now hasn’t she? How’s she doing?”

“She’s great. Yeah she’s 17 this year.” (Which is of course the same age as Jen currently)

“How’s Tommy?”

“(Tommy’s a crap name.)”

“(YOU’RE the mom.)”

“Tommy’s good. He starts kindergarten next year.”

“Oh wow he sure grew up fast. I still remember when he was this little.”

“Yeah, and Bindi’s 21.”

“Oh wow, must be a handful.”

“Hey you goin’ to the reunion next month?”

“Yeah, the 30th right?”

“(Wow that makes Tommy have a really old mom.)”

“20th? (No that means you had Bindi when you were in Yr 12. 25th, then.) Yeah 25th Reunion. Wow it’s been ages since I’ve seen Julia…”

“And SONAM! Yeah oh did you hear Jen T- is now the…”

“President of China?”

“Yeah and plus she discovered a cure for cancer.”

“And April…well we have to call her Senator Scarlett now. (No wait, you can’t be a Senator if you’re not born in America.)”

And so it went on.

The looks we got.

Alex.
